S&S Authors Share Star Trek Memories

September 05, 2017

In celebration of all things Star Trek, including the Discovery series launch this month, we asked some of our Simon & Schuster authors if they had any Star Trek memories they'd care to share with our followers. After recieving an outpour of hearfelt submissions, we have picked the best to pass along to you. Here's one from Mari Mancusi.

I have always considered myself a Trekkie, since I was a little girl. So imagine my delight when I discovered that my step-grandmother had actually been a guest star on the original show! She was in an episode called The Empath which aired in the show's third season, playing a character named Gem who is trapped in an underground chamber with the away team of Kirk, Spock and McCoy. Her character is mute so she doesn't have any dialog, but she definitely steals the show! In fact, DeForest Kelley has called The Empath his favorite Star Trek episode of all time.

As for my step-grandmother, Kathryn Hays, she says Gem remains one of her two favorite roles (second only to her 39 year stint as Kim Hughes on the soap opera As the World Turns) and says it was an "interesting challenge" and a "joyful experience." I can only imagine how much fun she must have had on that set, working with those amazing actors!
